The annual Spets Conference is a two-day meeting where Spets students and teachers get to share experiences and knowledge regarding their respective Spets program.
The conference is a platform where the different courses are to be developed based upon the reflections of the teachers and students involved. The Spets conference this year was held at Hvitfeldtska Gymnasiet in Gothenburg, and it was a very educational experience.
We had the chance to meet and talk to students of different profiles. Among these programs were: Natural Science Spets, Mathematics Spets, Biotech Spets, Physics Spets and our English Spets. We took part in seminars regarding the different skills that Spets students develop and how these help students prepare for their future studies.
One issue that was discussed was the fact that not enough people know about the Spets programs, and, therefore it is everyone’s responsibility to spread the word. The issue was discussed in groups where one representative from each Spets program deliberated about what strategy would be the most efficient way of promoting Spets. One idea that was recurrent in all groups was to spread the word using social media. The idea of creating an active and functioning Spets Facebook group was popular due to
Facebook being an accessible and favorable platform amongst year 9 students applying for Gymnasium. Another idea is that some of the VRG Spets English students will be involved in making a film as part of their Leadership and Organisation course that will feature students from other Spets programs throughout Sweden.
This conference was interesting and gave us a better understanding of the Spets program in all subjects.
